I made this artwork to play its role as a conduit for the convergence of past and present. The original sculpture, through the intricate portrayal of Hercules grappling with Nessus, encapsulates the strength, valor, and conflict inherent in humanity's journey through time. In contrary with stories of the Hindu mythologies, I find Greek divine/ heroic personas to be more relatable simply because they’re flawed—like humans. They display emotions of rage, envy, hatred, resentment and even enmity as shown by Hercules. While celebrated for his strength and heroism in Greek mythology, Hercules is depicted with his impulsiveness, temper and hubris. As he struggles with inner turmoil and fits of rage, it makes him a much digestible character.
I have aimed to recreate the tactile feel of ancient sculptures through an attempt of drawing textured clay-like impressions, invoking a visceral connection to the sculptures and architecture of that era. This sketch embodies my fascination with these timeless tales along with the architecture, history and artistic achievements of Greece in that period of time.
